I founded H.E.L.P. after I almost lost one of my own dogs to choking. My 5-pound chihuahua collapsed and turned blue before I could even turn around. Instincts from my first responder training kicked in, and thankfully, what I did saved her life.
Despite a lifetime of loving animals, it had never occurred to me to apply CPR and first aid skills to my pets. In that moment, I felt completely helpless—and I never wanted to feel that way again. I also never want anyone else to feel that same fear or hopelessness.
That moment is where H.E.L.P. was born.

30 years ago, my dog Cooper had a seizure. I had no idea what to do. What were the correct steps for a pet seizure? I felt horribly guilty for not knowing what to do for him. I felt like I'd failed him when he needed me most. After the seizure, I took him to the emergency vet and asked them where I could learn pet first aid & CPR. I'd been a first responder for humans for years, but I had never encountered a situation with a pet where I needed those skills. I immediately signed up for a course two days later, and my journey into pet first aid and CPR had begun.
